How to be a builder in QLD?

I believe being a builder is one of the popular professions for many young people.

Certainly, it has been my dream job since I was little. Commercial carpenters in Queensland, for example, can earn $90 per hour.  If you work in residential work, you might earn a little less, but have more freedom which I myself value the most. c

In Queensland, you must have licences as a builder or trades-person by QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission) but the best place to start is by getting qualified.  The Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Building) is an entry requirement to be a professional builder. Once you obtain your licence, it is important that you have experience in the building industry. This way, you can learn real skills from experienced builders and trainers on-site.

If you have experience before studying you can have your existing experience recognised through a process called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Common examples of direct evidence include work samples, records, artifacts, or any original documents (licence, academic transcript)  If not, you can also prove it with indirect evidence/secondary source that is an account written after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.

You need 2 years experience in the licence class scope of work or other work the commission is happy with at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for the course. Finding a place to get the equivalent experience by yourself is not easy. So you can have 2 years of experience from building work on class 1 or class 10 building or building work on classes 2 to 9 building with a gross floor area less than 2000 square meters. The important thing is it must be paid work. Unpaid work will not be recognised as experience. You can complete these 2 years of experience in between jobs.

The licensed builder/s who provide references for your experience must have held a Qualified Supervisor Certificate or Individual Contractor Licence in the scope of work for the class. I hope you feel one step closer to your dream job. Being a builder is awesome. You get to meet new families all the time and work with awesome people.
